Myspace

Hi Hope everyone is having a good summer! I created two (!!) myspaces so please have fun checking them out! I've just started (Quintette Monsolo had its myspace but I didn't have one of my own) and will try to update as much as possible... Must do the same with my official website as well!

I created the http://www.myspace.com/samikahonda first, but then i realised I hadn't signed up as an artist, and could not put on my music... so I had to create a second one... silly me... so to listen to my music, and get info about my concerts, please go to http://www.myspace.com/samikaviolinist or my official website www.samikahonda.com

Thanks! Enjoy the visits!

Events 2008 so far!

I thought I’d update on some of the activities I’ve been doing lately.

After the busy concert tour in Japan in December 2007, and a week of rest I spent with my family until the 31st December in

Japan (which I must admit I hadn’t spent the winter in Japan for 3 years… and the New Year’s events, I could not experience this time either… sorry mum and dad!) my year 2008 started quite busily also! Luckily I had had some rest, going to Hakone for the hot spring baths, and wonderful body massages I had by the professionals for 2 days, had recharged me well to stand up to my events in 2008.

I flew back to Paris on 1st January, arriving chez moi in the evening as usual. I unpacked partly my huge suitcase of 30kg, and started packing a smaller suitcase to prepare for my 5days in England… The eurostar was the next morning at 6am… Rendez-vous at Gare du Nord with my colleagues of Quintette Monsolo, with sleepy heads we said “Bonne Année!”. As Guillaume, our new 2nd violinist was not available, it was the first event with Aude… Despite the fatigue, it was fun setting off all together, kind of panicking as we arrived at St Pancras station as before it was Waterloo… And with the delay and unclear signals, we were running about to catch the trains… In the end, we managed to get to Wellington College… how freezing cold we were! We spent 3 days working with the Maggini Quartet, with Martin and Michal we worked on the Strauss Metamorphosen and performed it at the end, as well as getting advices on the Milhaud Quintet. It was fun. After that we spent a day in Megan’s house in Hampton Court.

As we got back to Paris, rehearsals with the real members (Guillaume and the others) everyday… we started working with the Ysaye Quartet at CNR as well. Then I had chamber music exam with a pianist on the Kreutzer sonata, and the week after an exam of the superior chamber music class with Sylvain for the duo or Martinu Madrigal no1 and Haendel Pasacaille… which went really well and we got Tres Bien à l’unanimité!! Haha! Then intensive rehearsals for the recording of the 3 Bach two pianos concerti… Which was recorded on 25th January at the Salle Cortot until midnight, celebrating with a champagne! It was an intensive concentration and I was in a terrible state of lack of sleep and fatigue, but at the end, it was a great fun also. I’m really looking forward to listening to the final discs.

Then without stopping came the rehearsals with Daria Hovora for the Onslow piano Quintet Op76 in B minor…an unknown quintet. It was to prepare for the concert on 14th February, but as we were in England a week before the concert, it had to be well prepared before our departure. It was new to everyone, and discovering this piece was really interesting… I quite like it, though I admit there are some parts which are difficult to really feel what to do…

As Guillaume got a tendonitis a week before the departure to England, it was a real panic again to find someone at the last minute who would be capable and willing to prepare a large programme… Luckily Eleonore saved us!! We had a programme of Dvorak Quintet Op77, Onslow Quintet ‘The Bullet’ 1st mvt, Britten Simple Symphony, Agut Cinq Chants Nocturnes (contemporary pieces written for us), and a bunch of repertoires with Julian Petit, the saxophonist for the arrangements of Bartok Roumanian Danses, Glazunov Reverie Orientale, Shostakovich Valse, Ituralde Czardas, etc…  We had a recording to do few days before the departure for Pierre Agut for his compositions, and Eleonore and we managed to prepare very speedily for the concerts in England. Quintette Monsolo had 3 concerts, one sharing with the Trio Klezele. In the end, we enjoyed our stay there, and did a good job on the concerts, though little disappointing for the lack of audience for the second concert.

Coming back to Paris on 11th at midnight, I had a rest on 12th… I really needed it. Then on 13th, we spent the whole day recording for a French film called “L’Empreinte de l’ange” which will be coming out somewhere in summer or fall 2008. It was my first experience to record for a film, it was really cool. The formation was string quartet (which we did with the members of the Quintette Monsolo, so Sylvain and Nicolas, and ex-Monsolo member Misa) , piano and clarinet. It was in a studio, where we could see the film making team next door, with the film director who commented on the scenes and what kind of moods we had to create. We were also directed by the composer, and we had a small screen in the studio with the film running as we played… I learned a lot of things I did not know before, how the accuracy is measured with the metronome we hear in our headphones, and how so many things are worked on in such extent to create just the sound of the film… In the break, we went in the bigger room next door, where the team was working on the sound, and there was the big screen with our music and other sounds put together, it was so cool! I’ll be proud when I go and see the film at the cinema and know that it is I who is playing!! Haha!

And the next day, 14th February, was the concert with Daria Hovora for the Onslow piano quintet. A small hall, which was freezing cold, and not a great acoustique, but it was nice to do a first event with Daria, and I look forward to the second concert which will be in Troyes, in the usual hall which sounds so well.

At last I’m having some time to relax a little, and practise my solo works. This weekend , we will be quite busy again, with students’ concert and selection of an international competition, but we are in vacation period, so things are a lot calmer all over, and I feel I really needed a bit of a break. The weather also is getting warmer and there were several days which were really sunny and blue sky, so I think spring is not so far now! Can’t wait!

Monsolo Japan Tour 2007

The First Quintette Monsolo Japan Tour. We had 9 concerts in total. Arriving on 11th december at Narita-Tokyo, we flew directly to Kochi from the Haneda aeroport, for 4 concerts. Was quite a tough schedule with a concert everyday since our arrival, and with Radio Live interview, TV interview, newspaper interview, I was quite stressed and nervous!! It was also great to be in close contact with children, for concerts and for masterclasses. On 16th, we moved to Saitama for a concert, and played also in Gunma. In both places we were warmly welcomed.

From the 18th, the final destination: TOKYO.  100th anniversary concert at my old high school : International school of the sacred heart. At last two days without concert!! so we had a look around the city for buying omiyage. 21st, a mini concert for little kids, and finally on 22nd, the big splendid concert at the Tokyo Bunkakaikan Small Hall. It was impressive... how the hall was full!! About 600people came to listen to us. it was fantastic. The hall is amazing in its sound effects, was so nice to play there. We did 5 encore pieces!! I think many people will remember this concert for a very very long time. It was a great way to finish the Monsolo Japan tour 2007.

Knowing that this was the last concert with the old members : Mi-Sa and Sietse-Jan, I was full of complicated mixed feelings. With these members, we had worked very hard, had gone through lots of memorable concerts and time together. I think it was a wonderful concert at the tokyo bunkakaikan for everyone of the group, and I'm sure it will remain as a strong memory for all of us.

Bravo everyone.

And a big thanks to my mother and father, and all the people who supported us, to make this tour possible, and to give us such a great time.

Quintette Monsolo

This month, I have lots of concerts and projects with my Quintette Monsolo. We flew to Palma de Mallorca, for a concert on 9th March, which was great fun. Concert, a success, nice people, good audience, wonderful weather, delicious food... really was excellent! Only, it was a bit short as i had another concert on 11th March in Paris, but all the same, we really enjoyed our little trip.

Quintette Monsolo was in "Simard" (a region in the Jura, in the mountains in France, near the border of Switzerland) just before, end of Feburary to beginning of March, for intensive training and fun in the snow!! :) We had a friendly concert too, on 3rd March. We had a relaxing fun time, and practised well, pity we all caught a flu after that!

I saw my first moon eclipse; i don't know if that's what it is called in english.... anyway "l'éclipse de lune" in french... was so mysterious and fantastic! At first, moon gets smaller and smaller, eaten up by the shadow of the earth, and then when it gets totally hidden, there's the orange red colour, so unreal and special... which replaces the moon. Unfortunately it was not visible all the time because of the clouds, but when the sky got cleared, it was really a splendid scene... On the photo, even with the great techique of Sieste-Jan and his camera, it looks like an egg, but in my mind, i still have it clearly printed. It was just amazing!!!!

We took some amusing photos with the Quintette Monsolo. I think they are quite nice.

Talking of concerts, Quintette Monsolo had concert yesterday at the old people's homes in Paris too. That was really funny. The audience was just great! There was an old man just behind me, who tapped his feet with music, sighed whenever he found it beautiful, and sang and imitated our rhythmes and even got to sing in the right tonality at the end!!! And remarks or a lady who said "it must be so difficult!" in between mouvements, and another who was sitting nearby who said "maybe it is not that difficult!"!!! That really made Sylvain (the violist) laugh!! And the numerous BRAVOs that went on during and after the concert; it was nice.

More events are coming up this month, i will try to update them and put up more photos! Wish us luck! :)

Funny Violins!

The other day, well actually ten days ago, I went to a little shop in Place des Voges (in Paris) where they sell very interesting rare instruments. I have passed by the boutique many times before, and have always been very curious, and in fact I did go in there once several months ago, but was so amazed by all the amazing instruments, just looking was enough at the time, and had no courage to try anything. And just a month ago, the shop was closed that day, but I was able to see from the outside that they had some funny shaped violins. Since several weeks ago, I have been reading a book about experimental violins (in the 20th century, lots of violin makes experimented on different forms, in the goal of improving the sound, or experiment on the sound effects. So I was very excited to go there to try them.

I tried the violin-trumpet, made of Aluminium. It was just GREAT! I had never even seen one in real before (I had been looking at photos on the internet) so just having it in front of me was quite something! And playing it was totally amazing! I didn't imagne a sound so generous and round, which projects well, with a nice quality of thickness too. The only thing was that it was very heavy!! I will need to do some muscle trainings to get myself fit to play it!!!! Well, it just needs getting used to, and I'd love to play it with ease...

The second violin I tried was a rigid shaped, rectangular shaped violin. It has flat body and back, and just looking at it, I had said to myself that it would not have a good sound quality. BUT I WAS WRONG!!
After playing on the Violin-Trumpet which was so heavy, this rectangular violin was so light, that it felt really weird lifting it up from the table... I mean, the trumpet violin is about 3 times heavier than a normal violin (in my estimation) and this violin was half the weight of a normal violin, ... so you can imagine the huge difference!!
It had no chin rest, and no shoulder rest, but to my surprise I had no problem in playing on it!!! And the SOUND!! It was beautiful!!!! It had a rich deep sound, which projects well, and I was really really impressed!! How such a funny rigid shaped violin, with such flat body, can produce a round and high quality sound! I even wondered why these shaped violins don't exist more!! I just couldn't let it go, I kept on trying on it. It was great fun!! :)

I also tried a BATMAN violin! As name explains it, it is in a shape like a bat... or batman??? It is just for fun that this shaped violin was made. To play on it, it is really inconvienient... I mean impossible to play anything, except for staying in the first position!! It was not comfortable at all, and not a pretty sound, but the shape was funny, so it was an occasion!

There were several other funny shaped violins, that I had read in the book and also had seen in the Cité de la Musique Museum, but that I could not try that day. One, a pocket-violin, really narrow and tiny, but with a normal finger board, another made with curved (like waves) wood, and a cornerless violin. I hope I will get the chance to play on these kinds too some day soon!!

I know that oneday, when I get quite a lot of money, I would love to buy one (or two!!!) of these instruments (the trumpet violin, or the funny shaped one which sounds well)... !!
